Unicorn Christmas Gift Quilt

Unicorn Quilt for Christmas

Project Summary:

My partner's niece is OBSESSED with Unicorns. She has unicorn shirts and pants; she has unicorn bags, stickers, markers, and even a unicorn air freshener.

Prior to Christmas, I was shopping for some sewing notions at Joann and I saw a panel with a unicorn and rainbow on it and I knew that I had to find some sort of project to gift to her for Christmas. When I got home and shared with my partner, he suggested a quilt and I was excited to try using a walking foot for the first time. In my previous quilting projects, I always pieced the tops and then paid for someone to long arm quilt the project.

Cue the Unicorn Christmas Quilt-
I added a rainbow-striped border onto the panel and found a matching Minky for the back. Luckily I was only shooting for a lap quilt. Even with the addition of the border, the quilt top JUST BARELY fit onto the Minky without having to piece the back. I used 100% cotton batting and did a simple diagonal straight line quilting. After that, I machine bound the quilt with the same rainbow stripe from the border.

Rose, Thorn, Bud, and Coming Up:

Roses:
  1.  She LOVED her Christmas present.
  2. I got to practice using my walking foot.
Thorns:
  1. The original panel was not square and I didn't realize until after I added the border and tried to mark the quilting lines.
  2. Minky is not my favorite fabric to sew with.
Bud:
  1. I learned that I can easily use a walking foot which is one of the things that has held me back from making some other garments (swimwear, eek!!).
Coming up:
  1. Pants!! Casual pants, work pants, all the pants
  2. Maybe a Fuller Cardigan from Cashmerette?
