Zippered Pouch on Serger

Project Summary:

I got very lucky and received my first serger at Christmas this year. I'm VERY excited to learn how to use it and to learn all of the things that I can do with this new machine. I got a Brother 1034D Serger from Amazon and I'm loving it so far.

In order to actually learn about how to use the machine, I decided to watch a Craftsy class called "Beginner Serging: Machine Basics and Techniques with Amy Alan." The class starts teaching you about the machine and takes you through basic stitches, decorative stitches, and includes 3 small projects.

If I'm honest, I was not patient enough to go through the class in order, but mostly because I was in the middle of a couple of other projects that I wanted to use my brand new serger to complete. I got started with the Serger Stitch Book and completed a couple of examples of stitches on quilting cotton and on a polar fleece and then moved on to the first project.

My first project on my new serger was a small zippered pouch. The project uses a 4-thread overlock stitch exclusively, so it is the perfect quick and easy project. I see a large collection of these pouches in my future.

Rose, Thorn, Bud, and Coming Up:

Roses:
  1. I think that my bag is super cute and I was able to troubleshoot a few small serger issues.
  2. I was able to successfully use my serger AND have a project that I'm proud of.
  3. I now have a project that can use a lot of the quilting cotton scraps that I have left from my ill-fated quilting projects.

Thorns:
  1. I was sewing later at night and was sloppy with my measurements. My finished product was about 2 inches smaller than intended.
  2. I need to work on installing zippers and little pull tabs. They didn't line up the way that I wanted.
  3. The interfacing that I used was nice, but it is a less structured than I would like.

Buds:
  1. I'm excited about adapting the pattern and the project for other fabrics and sizes.
  2. I am looking forward to learning more about my serger and using it to make new projects and make my projects more professional.

Coming up:
  1. Finish my AllWell Workshop Studio Pants
  2. Add more stitches to my serger stitch book
  3. Tackle the Infinity Scarf project in the Craftsy Class
  4. Find another pants pattern that I could use for work pants.
